Summer Reading: It's Not Too Late!

Books Can Be More Than Just An Escape
I hated junior high school.

This picture was taken pretty close to my absolute low point, at the start of Grade 9. I had endured two years of bullying, and was trying desperately to become invisible. Books were the only "friend" I had.

Why Do We Still Read (& Write) Books?

Fortunately for me, I was able to switch to a new school the next year. I chose one that was huge, so I could start over. In Grade 10 I made lots of friends, and was too busy to read books other than for English class.

My Grade 11 English teacher got me back into the joy of reading. For years it was all about fiction. I still love novels, but I also devour huge numbers of business books, and I co-chair Litfest, one of only three literary non-fiction festivals in the world. I'm also writing my 2nd book, PeopleShock: Why People Matter More Than Ever in the Digital Era & What That Means For Business.

So I thought that for this issue of the newsletter, I'd mention some of my favorite books. You've still got time to read at least one of them before the fall busy season kicks in!

The links point you to my "Amazon store". If you buy from there I earn a few pennies, but don't feel obliged to buy from there. It's just a convenient place for me to track what I've enjoyed.

Marketing & Customer Experience Books

The most effective kind of marketing is to offer related services or products that are so valuable people would pay for them... but you aren't asking them to. Great examples, great ideas!

Fiction

So hard to pick just a few, but these are some older ones that are among my all-time favorites.

Sophie's Choice

By William Styron
Reading this is like peeling an onion; there's always another layer. Tremendously moving.

In a Dark Wood Wandering: A Novel of the Middle Ages

By Hella S. Haasse
The best historical fiction I've ever read.

Passage To India

By E M Forster
Totally gripping. If you don't have time to read it, try to find a copy of the TV series, The Jewel and the Crown.
